The LGM-30G Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, or ICBM, is currently the United States' only operational land-based strategic nuclear missile. It is one leg of the nuclear deterrent "triad" that also includes USAF bombers and US Navy submarine-launched missiles. US nuclear forces are on alert at all times, ensuring a swift response in the event of a nuclear attack.

Defense Support Program (DSP) satellites were created in response to the growing threat of nuclear armed Soviet and Chinese ballistic missiles in the 1960s. The satellite accommodates thousands of detectors and can identify thermal radiation from rocket engine exhaust plumes of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM).
But mostly we could just outspeed any homing missile that would have to be led at least thirty miles ahead of its target to reach the Blackbird's altitude of sixteen miles high and at 2,000 mph-plus speeds. Most missiles exploded harmlessly two to five miles behind the streaking SR-71. Often the crew was not even aware they had been fired upon. - Skunk Works, Ben R. Rich & Leo Janos, page 240
